Cognitive problems - indication - dilemmas and solutions in the field of tension between therapeutic identity and role

Doctors are confronted with conflicts from two directions every day: firstly, the pressure of expectations from patients who see doctors as service providers in the sense of "desired medicine", and secondly, the pressure to economize motivated by sociopolitical reasons. The resulting dilemma between humanity and economy, between social responsibility and individual well-being, urgently needs clarification. This book offers the necessary guidance by asking about the ethical foundations of medical decision-making and action based on the particularity of the therapeutic situation. By exploring the structure of such specific therapeutic situations, it is possible to create greater clarity and certainty of action for doctors, patients and society.

Prof. Dr. med. Hermes Andreas Kick is Professor of Psychiatry at Universitaet Heidelberg. He is the Director of the Institute for Medical Ethics, Psychotherapy and Health Culture (IEPG) in Mannheim and a member of the European Academy of Sciences & Arts.
